HYDERUS+ project started
12-11-2025
The GTRC is pleased to announce the commencement of the HYDERUS+ project.

The EPSRC Switch to Net Zero Buildings (SNZB) Place Based Impact Acceleration Account is funding the 12-month project.

HYDERUS+ builds on the earlier HYDERUS project, to advance hydrogen decentralised energy utilisation and supply by improving the commercial viability of local hydrogen systems. The project focuses on reducing the cost of clean hydrogen through the sale and strategic use of valuable by-products generated during hydrogen production and utilisation.

HYDERUS+ will deliver a digital demonstration of a technological concept designed to provide clean hydrogen, electricity, heat, and associated by-products to buildings within the Swansea Bay City Region industrial hub. By applying detailed cycle modelling, the project aims to maximise the effectiveness and financial performance of decentralised heat and power solutions. A strong emphasis on knowledge exchange, supported by the integration of industrial partners’ financial tools and datasets, will help de-risk deployment and ensure the approach aligns with the needs and expectations of local stakeholders.

A key element of the study is assessing how hydrogen by-products can be supplied to nearby sustainable industries, enabling new partnerships and strengthening the cluster’s innovation ecosystem. This collaborative approach will encourage the adoption of emerging technologies, accelerate impact, and provide early-stage momentum for translating research into practice. Following completion, HYDERUS+ will seek further funding to develop a pilot demonstrator that will contribute to local decarbonisation skills and industry development.
